    A Taste of Spice

I have been featuring different family favourite recipes to you without explaining some of the backgrounds to them, and also, dare I say it, stealing some of my mother in law’s ideas without giving her due credit, so here is one of those. Lynda is also my business partner in Crumbles Catering and it is often to her I turn for many of my trusted recipes.

This particular recipe came about by her being taught how to cook authentic Indian Dishes by a neighbour and in exchange she taught the neighbour how to drive, I think Lynda got the best deal as I have seen her driving!

These strangely named Fish Chops are best served up as a starter to your Indian Extravaganza but believe me they are so filling, they can easily do as a main course or perhaps a nice lunch option.

As I also mentioned previously that we were promised an Indian Summer, I decided we should try and warm ourselves up with a little bit of Spicy Nights.

    Fish Chops

    1tsp cumin seeds
    1tsp coriander seeds
    Seeds from 6 cardamon pods
    1/2 tsp turmeric
    1inch ginger
    1 medium onion
    1 clove garlic
    5 medium potatoes
1 medium chilli finely chopped(remove seeds)
    1 tin tuna (drain oil)
    1tsp salt
    1egg & Breadcrumbs to coat

Chop onion finely, fry until translucent. Crush Garlic, grate ginger and add to onion fry for 30 seconds. Grind cumin, coriander & cardamom seeds in pestle & mortar, add with turmeric and chilli to pan and fry for another 1 minute. Add salt. Add tuna and fry for a few minutes breaking chunks up into small even flakes mixed well with onion and spice mixture.

Meanwhile, peel, boil and mash potatoes. Add tuna mixture to mash and mix well. Form mixture into 3inch ovals – see picture – in the palm of your hand, dip in beaten egg, and coat in breadcrumbs. Do this for all the mixture.

Heat ½ inch of oil on a medium heat in a large shallow frying pan until a small piece of bread browns in around 1 minute.
Fry the fish chops in batches in the oil until golden brown on both sides, turning once.
